What is Ayurveda
and how does it work?

Ayurveda is a holistic health system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The Sanskrit word translates to “science of life”. Health, according to this ancient science, is a state of balance where your body, mind, and spirit are in harmony, your digestion is strong, your senses are clear, and you feel joyful and at ease.

Each person has a unique combination of the three vital energies called “Doshas”. This determines their constitution, or “Prakriti”.

When the doshas are in balance, we experience health. When they’re out of balance, discomfort can arise and – over time – diseases can manifest.

Ayurvedic treatment aims to restore balance and maintain health through:

  • Appropriate diet
  • Herbal remedies
  • Natural therapies like oil massage
  • Lifestyle adjustments including sleep, exercise, and stress management
  • Mind-body practices like yoga, meditation, and breathwork

Explore
the three doshas

The Kapha dosha is formed by the subtle elements of earth and water. It provides structure, stability, and lubrication in the body. People with a Kapha constitution are typically calm, nurturing, and grounded.

When aggravated, excess Kapha can manifest as:

  • Weight gain and feeling of heaviness
  • High cholesterol, high blood pressure
  • Fatigue, excessive tiredness and needing to sleep during the day
  • Brain fog, feeling low, depression
  • Lethargy and sluggish digestion
  • Congestion and mucus buildup
  • Respiratory issues like asthma, frequent coughs and colds
  • Yeast or fungal infections
  • Stiffness in joints and muscles
  • Water retention and puffiness
  • Excessive emotional attachment and resistance to change

The Pitta dosha – consisting of the Fire and Water elements – governs transformation, digestion, metabolism, and intelligence. It is responsible for converting food into energy, processing thoughts, and maintaining body temperature. Fire provides clarity, ambition, and vitality.

When the Pitta dosha is aggravated, it can cause:

  • Acidity, heartburn
  • Digestive disorders like diarrhoea or loose stools, peptic ulcers, gastritis, colitis, Crohn’s disease
  • Inflammation and skin rashes
  • Skin conditions like acne, rosacea, skin outbreaks and pimples
  • Irritability, anger, and impatience
  • Excessive thirst and sweating
  • Increased body temperature and hot flashes
  • Excessive hunger and thirst
  • Cramping
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Menstrual disorders like heavy bleeding, endometriosis

Vata governs movement in both body and mind — it’s the energy behind circulation, respiration, and communication. Vata’s subtle elements are air and ether, providing lightness, agility, and adaptability.

When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to:

  • Anxiety, restlessness, and overthinking
  • Scattered mind, forgetfulness
  • Unintended weight loss or struggling to gain weight
  • Insomnia, disturbed sleep, sleep walking, vivid dreams
  • Frequent urination
  • Dry, itchy skin, psoriasis, eczema
  • Digestive issues like IBS, bloating, excess gas and constipation
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Irregular appetite and digestion
  • Dysmenorrhea or Amenorrhea

How can I
help you?

Let’s get this straight — Ayurveda is not a quick fix, a diet fad or a magic bullet to solve all your problems overnight. It takes patience and commitment, but it’s also one of the most rewarding journeys you’ll ever take.

To get the best, lasting results, I recommend a series of consultations over a few months. In our first session, I’ll ask lots of questions about all areas of your life to understand your constitution, habits and imbalances. This helps us uncover the root causes of your health concerns and informs your personalised treatment plan.

Each follow-up consultation is a chance to reflect and deepen your understanding of your body and mind, while learning more about Ayurvedic principles. We’ll continue to tweak and fine-tune your treatment plan.

My approach is gentle, mindful, and judgment-free. Whether you’re short on time, stuck in unhealthy habits, or unsure where to start, we’ll work as a team to find practical solutions that fit your life.

I’m here to navigate and support you — but you’ll always be the one steering the ship.
